Opera Software announced today the initial beta of Opera 6.0 for the Linux operating system. Version 6 follows the popular version 5 release of the Opera browser for Linux, which according to the press release announcing the beta, has been downloaded over a million times to date.

New features include a Mozilla inspired cookie manager for viewing and editing cookies set by web sites, improved skinning and themes, Netscape style plug in support for Flash, Acrobat, Real, Quicktime and others, and 'mouse gestures' which untill now were only available from the Windows version of the software.

You can download the beta release from the Opera Software website, or view a screenshot of the new release (opens in new window).

Opera can be downloaded and used for free, but advertising is attached. The ad-free version of Opera costs $39, although those who purchased version 5 of Opera will be able to upgrade for free to 6.0 beta. If you purchased version Opera version 4, there's a $15 charge to upgrade.

Love the tabs.

I can't wait to get home and start downloading this browser. The CSS tab looks particularly useful, and I'm looking forward to finding out what the Unix tab does.

CSS tab?

When you say "CSS tabs" do you mean a feature that allows you to view alternate stylesheets on a website if they're defined? If so, that'd be really cool... I recently found out about that feature on another evolt members website, and think it's great! It's nice to see another browser taking advantage of that feature :)

Mouse gestures

Oh, I'm so glad there are mouse gestures on the Linux version now. I've been using them on the windows version for a while now and they're great. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do they save you so much time you find yourself trying to use them in other apps!
