Last week, Adobe announced its latest upgrade to the digital imaging behemoth that is Photoshop. Photoshop 7.0 claims to include vital new tools, extended OS support, and improved file organisation.

However, its release date is not expected until the second quarter of 2002.

New features listed on the Adobe site include:

  • Improved file browser
  • Healing brush
  • Transparency tools for web output
  • Spell checker for text layers
  • More web gallery templates
  • Pattern maker plug-in
  • Refreshed painting engine
  • Enhanced liquify tool
  • and the much awaited support for Mac OS X & Windows XP

While a preview or tour does not seem to be available on adobe.com, interested people can browse Digital Mastery's "The Ultimate Guide to Photoshop 7.0".

(Personally, I think this could be an upgrade to avoid.)

Why avoid v7?

Submitted by gnarly on March 6, 2002 - 06:22.

Why do you think its an upgrade to avoid? I've wanted a PaintShopPro style file browser for ages :-) Mind you, it a bit late now Win2K has a thumbnail mode in the file requesters...

Well,

Is a file browser like that really worth the upgrade cost? Some of the other "improvements" like colour rollovers on the tools palette are seriously lame.

I don't find many things in Photoshop 6 that drive me nuts anyway (certainly can't think of anything off the top of my head).

Good Point

I suppose asking a large upgrade fee is a bit much considering the new features in there only really mark it out as a 6.5 rather than a full on 7.0. That said, they do have to recoup the cost of Carbonising the Mac version, and eX-Pee-ising the PC version... I suppose they must be running out of ideas for new features now. Personally I would like to see some of the functionality of Photogenics put in the next version.

Been waiting

I'm personally excited about this release. The reason is now I can be able to fully work in OS X. Photoshop is that last Carbonized app standing in the way of my new workflow. To be honest, I really didn't care about the new features, I just wanted it to work on X ASAP.

Where's the demo?

Submitted by haidary on March 8, 2002 - 01:56.

My only question is where's the demo? I'm not about to go out and spend the money on a software update unless I'm sure that it's worth my hard earned money. Would you guys happen to know something I don't, like where the demo is? lol. Anyway, thanks for bringing this new version to my attension as I wasn't aware of it untill I read the artical.

i'm still on 5.5...

Submitted by mauwolff on April 8, 2002 - 00:13.

i've installed 6 just to see what's about it, but since i'm using Phoshohop since 2.5 and for me the most powerfull tool still is the channels pallete, i don't want to slow down my PC that much for... "swap image html export" or whatever. :)
