Ran accross the most interesting, not to mention nostalgic, Web site today - the Netscape Time Capsule. Lots of history, screenshots, and old Mozilla logos from the company that introduced the browser to millions of people.

My favorite part of it is this posting from MarcA announcing the arrival of his new software to the Internet.(Yes, back then you could announce something to the entire Internet with a singular email/usenet post ;)

Ahh the memories of a simpler time..

Dan lives a quiet life in the bustling city of Milwaukee, WI. Although he founded what would become evolt.org in 1998, he's since moved on to other projects and is now the owner of Progressive Networks, a Zimbra hosting company based in Milwaukee.

His personal site can be found at http://dancody.org/

..and even a link to browsers.evolt.org ;) the Time Capsule is a great site, we should all as workers in this industry take the time to visit it - to understand our origins. Here it is, world! indeed!

Woo this made me feel old! I think the earliest version of NN I came across was 0.96 for Mac, and I remember that it went *much* faster than Mosaic (from multiple connections I think). The "What's New" list was a real killer - there were things like "A home page for Yugoslavia" and so on. And there was one bit of the 'heartwarming intro' page, which went "How do you remember all these addresses?" In those days, you probably *did* know most of the extant domains. I certainly knew just about all the uk ones. And pretty much every one of them described itself as '[Organisation] Experimental World Wide Web Service' The only way to get web server space in those days was to be a computing student, know one, or be a member of a uni web society. And it was nigh on impossible to get a domain of your own.

Funny you should mention the link to the browser archive oliver.. I was just cat'ing through the referer log for the archive and saw the referer from the time capsule page. Pasted it into a browser and checked out, and was amazed. Pretty dumb luck that someone linking to us would have such a kick ass site. :)

Actually, the guy who built the Netscape Time Capsule started on the web in the same group as me. Had the best damn Calvin & Hobbes site on the internet (see, Buffalo is good for something).
Tonight it got listed on Slashdot, which came from a link from Scripting News, which in turn came from a link from Metafilter. I'm hoping when mathowie posted it to Metafilter, he saw it on evolt.org first and we're the ones who caused the slashdot.
Either way, it's spread like wildfire, much like that first beta of Mozilla.

You got me aardvark! Last night I couldn't sleep, saw my midnight mailing of the evolt headlines, saw the old netscape site and was amazed. I posted it on my metafilter site, and should have credited you guys. I also sent it to a web discussion list, where members told flashback stories for a while. Someone on the list presented the Microsoft link, which I posted in a new evolt story (and was a comment here, but I just deleted it). So yeah, for those of you scoring at home, the slashdot link is 100% the result of the evolt article. Funny how memes spread.

I've been pretty surprised by the interest this site's generated so far. When I first began to work on this site a little over three years ago, there seemed to be little to no interest and I yanked it to create more space for some Calvin and Hobbes web stuff. When I came across this early project last month while going through some of my old archives, I figured I'd spice the site up and try again. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder...

Looks like we were a little slow... It was mentioned at BrowserWatch three weeks ago.
