Evolt.org is an international web development community. In our ranks you will find designers, coders, database developers, web novices and seasoned professionals. This community is brought together though an active mailing list and companion web site featuring articles and commentary from the web development community at large.

Evolt.org is not-for-profit and entirely volunteer-run. Evolt.org is for open and free knowledge sharing.

Get to know us

If you haven't written for evolt.org before, please take a walk through our Web site and familiarize yourself with our existing material. Our site holds hundreds of member-submitted articles, covering a range of web development topics. Here's how to get to the heart of who we are and what we need:

  • Check out our most recent articles by looking at what is on our index page.
  • Search the site to see if an article similar to the one you'd like to write is on our site already.
  • Visit the index page of the category you're interested in to see what has been written recently.

Style

Writing for the web is very different than writing for print. Keep your sentences short and to the point. If you can, break up your article into short sections with descriptive sub-heads so that the reader can scan (see Good Examples below).

While our core audience is composed of web developers, avoid overloading your article with jargon. Be sure to spell out acronyms and provide short explanations or footnotes as necessary.

Structure

The hardest time in writing an article is when you have a blank screen in front of you, and you're thinking "Where do I start?". Take a look at the How-to How-to for a useful skeleton that most articles can use as a jumping off point.

Good Examples

The following is a list of articles written for evolt.org that we feel are excellent examples of the kind of writing and topics we are looking for:

Submit an article

To submit an article or an idea for an article, you need to first be a member. Sign up here for a login name and password. You can also subscribe to our active web development mailing list to get an even better idea of who evolt.org is and the type of articles that are of interest to the web development community.

If you have an idea for an article but aren't sure whether it is appropriate for us, send a note to us with your idea and someone from the admin group will get back to you with feedback and/or a go-ahead.

If you are a member and have written an article, go ahead and submit it. Please be sure that you have double-checked and edited your own article for grammar, continuity and consistency before you submit it. We recommend that you write and edit the piece locally on your computer before cutting and pasting into our submission form. You may want to use markup to create bold headings or other formatting -- be sure to read through the coding style guide FAQ to learn what tags are appropriate.

A submitted article will go into the queue for admin approval. One or more members of the admin team will read it, edit it for grammar, code and content and either contact you with changes or approve it. Once approved, your article will be live and on the home page.

Evolt.org does not accept vendor-submitted articles (articles written by a company or its representatives designed to promote or publicize a commercial product, company or event).

Rights

Evolt.org owns one-time rights to your work which means that we own the non-exclusive right to publish your work and you are free to republish your article elsewhere. Should you republish an article which first appeared at evolt.org, we think it'd be really cool if you felt like noting that like this, "This article first appeared on Evolt.org."

Compensation

Evolt.org is a non-profit organization and can offer no financial compensation for articles written. By writing for evolt.org, you are giving back to the web development community. It will make you feel good.

Unable to submit an article!

Submitted by nicolaasuni on September 16, 2003 - 07:39.

I'm 5 days trying to contact someone on this site but no one has answered to my questions. My problem is that I'm trying to submit an article on this site but the submission form returns an error page when I click the "Preview Article" button. Seems that this behaviour happened only when the article is too big. I don't think that my article is very long and I can't split it without losing the general meaning. Is there an alternative way to post the entire article?

Being defintivie is rare.

Writing something definitive is very rare. As far as evolt is concerned, these guidelines couldn't be better. I also enjoy your style of writing, I read also about the Company-X and I found the example about the "flaming piranhas" hilarous. As a french writer of the 18th century, Vauvenargues, wrote:

"Lightboxes" Have Gone Digital

Submitted by EHimmerich on May 13, 2007 - 04:18.

Websites need images as much as copy. Good graphic designers can come up with great CSS and templates to unify and liven websites. Still, depending on the subject of the site, visuals of a specific topic or subject may be called for.

Stock photography is simply what it says: it is photography or other images that are "in stock" for when you need it. (See the article on "stock photography" at http://www.evolt.org/article/Stock_Photography_Resources_for_Web_Designers/22/3631/.) It is often much more efficient - and cost effective - to pick an image from a stock photo publisher than to start from scratch and try to come up with an image yourself.

One feature of stock photography sites that web designers may overlook is the "lightbox." Most stock photo sites have them. The name is a throwback to the time when graphic designers had to drape film over - yes - boxes with a lightbulb in them.

There is some confusion between shopping carts and lightboxes. Lightboxes are NOT shopping carts. Shopping carts are used to total up a sale and get ready to place an order. NOT SO with lightboxes. Lighboxes are meant to serve as a vehicle to organize the images you are looking though - it is sort of like putting sticky notes on your favorite images and then categorizing them by topic.

Even more useful is the fact that you can use this tool to interact with clients in decision-making. Mega-photography portal Fotosearch Stock Photography allows you to set up a user account and share or email lightbox selections to clients and other decision-makers.

This process is an ideal way to involve clients and website owners in the web design process. They may not understand the nuances of code and programming, but they CAN participate in selecting something that will be an important aspect of the package they present to the public.

Good quality photo and image content is KEY in turning a standard site into a quality, professional presentation. Involving the people whose opinions matter most by sharing a lightbox helps you accomplish two important goals with one simple vehicle.

CMS Software expert position available

Submitted by ksanders on July 13, 2007 - 19:05.

Hi - I've been trying to figure out how to post my "article", which is actually a position that we have available in our firm. I am currently looking for a CMS Expert, not necessarily someone that codes, but someone who is very capable with the software and can talk to people about it. We have a long term contract available to work within our Consulting group of our firm, with a client of ours. We are a full service firm, our services include: Tax services, Audit and Attest services, Fraud Litigation, and Valution services, as well as Consulting which is where the position is located. If you are interested in finding out more please email me at ksanders@uhy-us.com. Or if you know how I can get this position posted on the job board that would be nice to know as well. Thanks and I hope to hear from someone!!

no submission form

Submitted by influence_master on August 24, 2007 - 02:10.

I signed up 24hours ago, created a snazzy profile and hunkered down to submit a load of articles that I know can really kick butt (like how to get a PR 8 in on year). But the article submission form is conspicuously missing. I'd love some assistance. Cheers!
