Writer's Guidelines

Evolt.org is an international, non-commercial community of web, internet, and intranet professionals. Our community is brought together though an active mailing list and companion web site featuring articles and commentary from the web development community at large. Evolt.org is not-for-profit and entirely volunteer-run.

Get to know us

If you haven't written for evolt.org before, please take a walk through our site and familiarize yourself with us and our existing material. Our site holds hundreds of member-submitted articles, covering a range of web development topics. You can also subscribe to our active web development mailing list to get an even better idea of who evolt.org is and the type of articles that are of interest to the web development community.

Style

Follow good writing for the web practices. Write in your own voice while keeping our professional, international audience in mind. Avoid overloading your article with jargon, and make explicit the meanings of abbreviations and acronyms. Mark up articles in simple, valid, XHTML. Read our code style guide for more information.

If you have an idea for an article but aren't sure whether it is appropriate for us, send a note to us with your idea and someone from the admin group will get back to you with feedback and/or a go-ahead.

Submit an article

If you are a member, have written an article, have followed our code style guidelines, have thoroughly checked your spelling and grammar, and have validated your XHTML—you are ready to login and submit!

A submitted article will go into the queue for admin approval. One or more members of the admin team will read it, edit it for grammar, code and content and either contact you with changes or approve it. Once approved, your article will be live and on the home page.

Evolt.org does not accept vendor-submitted articles (articles written by a company or its representatives designed to promote or publicize a commercial product, company or event).

Rights

Evolt.org generally asks for first-time publication rights. That means that evolt.org should be the first place you publish your article. After your article has been live on our site for a full month, you may republish it elsewhere (on your blog or in other publications). If you republish your article, we appreciate if you note on subsequent instances that it was first published on evolt.org.

Evolt.org may republish exceptional articles under limited conditions. If you wish to submit previously published articles on evolt.org, please send a note first and let us know exactly when and where the article has been published. If you have already published an article in more than two places, please do not submit it to evolt.org. Writers who repeatedly attempt to republish on evolt.org without full-disclosure will be considered spammers.

Compensation

Evolt.org is a non-profit organization and can offer no financial compensation for articles written. By writing for evolt.org, you are establishing your reputation as a contributing member of our community. It will make us happy, and it will make you feel good. Win-win!
